Two backpackers have been left with serious injuries after an attack by a mob in Christchurch.
Police said the two male tourists, both aged in their 20s, were admitted to hospital this morning after being beaten by up to eight people outside the backpackers they were staying at on Worcester St.
Their injuries included a broken jaw and eye damage.
A Canterbury District Health Board spokesman said the pair were in stable condition this afternoon.
Police say the attack took place about 2:30am and are appealing for information.
They say there is no CCTV footage of the event.
They will speak to the tourists, one French and the other British, once they have been treated.
