Destiny Church is launching another bid to open a charter school in south Auckland.

The controversial religious group has already had two earlier bids declined, but believes it has a strong case as its targeting Maori and Pacific Island students.

Green party education spokesperson Catherine Delahunty thinks it is actually about the money.

"A lot of the charter schools have got a lot more money at their disposal and I think Destiny are keeping going because this a good way to build a school based on your own particular beliefs, which is what private schools are allowed to do, but get all that extra money for it."

Ms Delahunty says state funding should be used to strengthen existing schools in the area instead.
