Lake Wanaka is well on the way to recovery after an intensive effort to rid it of an invasive aquatic weed.

Land Information Minister Louise Upston says two thirds of the lake has been cleared by her department, working with the lake's management committee.

The project began in 2005 and will be completed during the next few years.
