An elderly man is in a critical condition following a three-car crash on State Highway 1, north of Puhoi, this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 11:15am where the man, in his 80s, was trapped inside his car and had to be cut out by the Fire Service.
He has since been flown to hospital by Westpac Helicopter.
Dr Inia Raumati, from the Westpac Helicopter service, said the man was the sole occupant of his car and it appeared he may have "an event".
"He had allegedly been driving erratically and crossed the centre line."
He had multiple injuries, and other patients were taken by St John to the hospital with moderate injuries, she said.
The highway was blocked as a result of the crash but has been reopened. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
