The condition of a man shot by police in Motueka following an armed stand-off is improving.

Ford Hurinui, who was wanted for parole violation, was shot by police on Thursday after he allegedly pulled a gun on officers trying to arrest him over breaches of his release conditions.

He was transferred from Nelson Hospital to Wellington Hospital and remained in a critical condition.

His condition has improved to serious but stable, a spokeswoman for Capital & Coast District Health Board said on Sunday.
