Police searching for a man who was believed to be armed and making threats against his family forced two south Auckland schools into lockdown.

The schools in Papatoetoe were placed in temporary lockdown today while armed police searched a nearby property and recovered two firearms.

Police are still hunting for the man, who they named as Abdul Hafiz, over an alleged firearms incident in the suburb.

They say he is not believed to be armed, but should not be approached.

His family are safe and well.

Police say they received a call around 9am to say a man with a firearm was threatening his family.
