Police are stunned a woman tried to speed away from a drink-driving checkpoint with four children in the car.
A 28-year-old Hawera woman faces charges of drink-driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop and four counts of ill-treating children following the incident in Taranaki last night.
The woman failed to stop at the checkpoint and led police on a "short, but high speed" chase before she was stopped by two police cars, police allege.
The children discovered in the car were aged between four and 14.
The driver allegedly blew over 1000mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, four times the limit of 250.
Sergeant Pat Duffy said he was dismayed that anyone responsible for children would drive them when intoxicated and then try to evade police at speed.
The charges reflect the seriousness of the alleged offences, he said.
The woman will appear in Hawera District Court on Tuesday.
