Police are seeking a second man thought to have been in a vehicle with a person who was shot and critically wounded by officers in Motueka yesterday.
It is alleged Ford William Hurinui aimed a gun at officers before he was shot.
The 27-year-old was on the run after breaching the conditions of his parole.
Tasman District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus says the situation rapidly unfolded.
"This was a very fluid event, a very fast-past event, from when the police called on a vehicle to stop, the vehicle doesn't stop, the offender presents a firearm at police and then flees."
Mr Hurinui was last night flown to Wellington Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition this morning.
