Snow and ice still affecting roads

Snow and ice are continuing to make driving hazardous across the South Island.

State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound remains closed and isn't expected to reopen until some time tomorrow.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning drivers to take extra care on other highways in Otago, Southland, Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough.

Road snowfall warnings remain in place for the Porters Pass, Lindis Pass and Milford Rd, although snow showers were expected to ease this afternoon.

In the North Island, snow showers could cause problems on both the Desert Rd and the Napier-Taupo Rd tonight and tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, several motorists had to be rescued from their cars after snow closed SH73 in the South Island between Otira and the West Coast yesterday night.

Police and NZTA contractors moved the cars and their passengers were taken to safety for the night.

Metservice has issued a severe weather watch for the central North Island, with snow possible in high country areas tonight and tomorrow morning.
