A fire in a Christchurch garage which spread to an adjacent flat is being treated as suspicious as nearby skips were also set ablaze.
The occupant of the flat was able to escape - police believe it had working fire alarms - when the flat went up in Bangor Street about 3.30am.
"Given the timing and location of the fires it is fortunate that no one in the complex of flats was killed or seriously injured," said Detective Constable Zhe Zhang.
The flat was badly damaged.
Two fires were found in skips at construction sites surrounding the property.
