A driver was caught steering with his knee and texting with two cellphones – one in each hand – in west Auckland yesterday.

Officers spotted the man while stationed on Lincoln Rd in Henderson as part of a national crackdown on people texting behind the wheel.

Fifty-four infringement notices were issued for cellphone use in that operation alone.

Offenders also included a man with a phone in one hand and a beer in the other, and a woman texting while towing a horse float and with three children in the back of the car.

Police have labelled the behaviour as "frightening".

"If you're that desperate to update your Facebook status, speak to someone, or send a text, then pull over," says Inspector Trevor Beggs.

"It's not worth a lifetime of regret if you kill someone behind the wheel because you needed to tell someone to get the washing off the line or your boss that you’re running late."
