Homicide inquiry after body found in car

A homicide investigation is underway after a man's body was discovered in a car on a Far North beach last night.

The 62-year-old's body was found in the red Nissan Primera on Tokerau Beach, near Whatuwhiwhi, about 10:30pm, police say.

A 61-year-old woman is helping police with their inquiries but no arrests have been made, says Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen a Primera, registration XU4691, being driven around the area between 7:30pm and 10:30pm.

Police and forensic scientists are examining the car and an address in Whatuwhiwhi while a post-mortem examination is being carried out in Auckland.

The man's name will not be released until the next of kin have been informed, Det Snr Sgt Johnston said.
