An investigation by the Department of Corrections is underway after an inmate died at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo on Sunday morning.
It's unclear how the man died, but prison staff gave him medical attention before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I can confirm a prisoner passed away yesterday morning (Sunday) and his next of kin have been informed," prison director Tom Sherlock said in a statement.
The death is not being treated as suspicious, and has been referred to the coroner.
Corrections will also look into what happened.
