A large slip on the North Island's east coast has forced State Highway 35 to be closed at Maraenui Hill.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says the slip happened on the stretch of road between Opotiki and the East Cape.

There is no detour in place and motorists are advised to delay travel in the area.

It's expected to be at least three hours before contractors are able to clear the slip to open the road to one lane.
