Thieves attempt to steal ATMs with car

Two men are on the run after they tried to steal at least two ATMs using a stolen car in eastern Bay of Plenty this morning.

The first attempted robbery happened around 1:50am at a service station in Edgecumbe.

Police say the men unsuccessfully used a chain on the back of the vehicle – a 1996 Izuzu Wizard – to try and pull an ATM from the wall.

After failing at their attempts, the men travelled to Kawerau where they tried to steal a cash machine at Tawawera Mall.

While the offenders didn't manage to steal any ATMs, they caused significant damage to both buildings.

Police are looking for at least two men seen in the vehicle, which was stolen from Kawerau earlier this week.

The registration number is JCJ5, and the vehicle is described as being silver/gold in colour. Police say the car will have sustained some damage from this morning's robbery attempts, including a broken taillight.
