Black Power members ditch the drugs

A group of Black Power members have given 3D an inside look at their mission to get clean from destructive drug use.

The group of Wellington Black Power members have signed up to a new policy, a kaupapa, which will determine their future. It's a future in complete opposition to what you might expect from hardened gang members – they're aiming to become methamphetamine-free.

To get there, they're putting themselves through compulsory drug tests – the sort of thing you'd expect in prison and many workplaces – and, for the first time, they're making the results public.

The Black Power members have said they're committed to kicking methamphetamine addiction. They say the drug is too destructive to their families.

They believe the testing is a first for gangs, but they're understandably a bit touchy about it. They want to stress they're speaking only for themselves with this kaupapa, not for the wider Black Power membership, but you'd have to see this as a step in the right direction.

It is hard fighting addiction. One of the group members has fallen off the wagon, but he's being offered one more chance to clean up.
