A man has been arrested and charged with assault following an alleged attack near Bluff.
The 49-year-old has been taken into custody over an alleged assault on Sunday, October 25.
He is due to appear in Invercargill District Court in December.
Police have also been investigating the death of Australian woman Tamara Maree Schmidt, after she was hit by a car on a highway between Bluff and Invercargill early on Monday.
Yesterday they said she may have been dead before she was hit by a vehicle.
"We are still working out how she came to be lying in the road and we can't rule out the possibility she may have been dead beforehand," a police spokesman said.
Police were earlier calling for witnesses who had seen anyone walking along the highway between 9:30pm on Sunday and early Monday.
A spokesman declined to comment on whether the arrest was connected to the death.
