A person killed in a caravan fire at a Richmond caravan park will take some time to be identified, police say.

Emergency services were called to a fire in a caravan at the Waimea Town and Country Club in Richmond, near Nelson, at about 8pm on Saturday.

A body was found inside the caravan.

Detective Sean Young said the fire was still being treated as unexplained.

A post mortem examination would be completed on Monday but it would be some time before formal identification was complete, he said.

Police hope to speak to anyone who may have taken photographs or video of the fire that may assist with the investigation.

The club runs a caravan park with 64 powered sites and 10 non-powered sites, according to its website.
