Ewen Macdonald appeared before the Parole Board today, but it has reserved its decision on whether he'll be able to leave prison.
Macdonald was acquitted of his brother-in-law Scott Guy's murder at a 2012 trial.
But he was put behind bars for almost five years after pleading guilty to torching Mr Guy's old house, vandalising his new house, stealing deer and killing calves on nearby farms.
His sentence is due to end in April next year.
The hearing was held at Rolleston Prison today, but no media were allowed into the hearing.
