An Australian woman found dead after being hit by a car on a remote South Island highway has been named by police.

Thirty-seven-year-old Brisbane woman Tamara Maree Schmidt is believed to have been walking along State Highway One between Bluff and Invercargill when she was hit by a vehicle at about 1am on Monday.

Police are now calling for sightings of a Britz campervan in the area after 9pm on Sunday, as they continue to piece together her death.

A post-mortem was carried out yesterday and police say they have investigated a number of vehicles and locations.
