The Block NZ's Scottish builder faces deportation

Scottish builder and star of The Block New Zealand Martin Laidlaw is facing deportation.

Mr Laidlaw has been refused a visa and told to leave the country, despite a shortage of builders.

His boss says it's because Immigration New Zealand wants them to find a Kiwi for the job.

Mr Laidlaw has been fired and if found on a building site his employer faces a $50,000 fine.

He has 41 days to leave the country.

The irony is Mr Laidlaw's job as a qualified foreman and project manager features on the Government's long-term skill shortage list and the Canterbury skill shortage list. Mr Laidlaw ticks most of the boxes.

But the fact his employer didn't look for a Kiwi means he's got to go.

While builders are in demand, Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse is unwilling to make a call on whether the high-profile carpenter should stay.
