A tramper lost on Mt Ngauruhoe and down to the last five percent of his phone battery has managed to direct a helicopter to his rescue.
The tramper spent last night on the central North Island volcano after he got lost.
"He was able to get mobile phone coverage this morning which allowed him to contact the police," says a spokesman for the Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter.
Police were then able to direct the helicopter to an initial search area.
Despite the intermittent mobile phone coverage and apparently only five percent of his phone battery remaining the helicopter crew were able to ring the tramper and pinpoint where he was.
"He was uninjured and very grateful for the offer of transport back to (relative) civilisation."
