Two youths have been arrested after a member of the public stopped them allegedly beating up a man in Christchurch, but police are now looking for the victim.
Police say a man in his 20s was set upon near Addington's Tower Junction Mega Centre about 10:30pm yesterday.
He was punched a number of times in the face before a member of the public intervened and the attackers rode off on their bicycles. The man followed the pair and called police, who picked them up on the other side of Hagley Park.
The two males, aged 15 and 17, have been charged with assault with intent to injure and will appear in Christchurch District Court, says Senior Sergeant Kerry Joyce.
"Police would also like to thank the member of the public who intervened. His actions probably saved the victim from serious injury and his phone call allowed the police to quickly apprehend the youths responsible."
Police are now trying to identify the victim, who is described as Caucasian in his mid-20s, with short dark hair and wearing a greenish coloured t-shirt, long dark pants and a jersey tied around his waist.
