University students rally against rising fees

Students will rally tomorrow at the University of Auckland against rising fees and inadequate student support.

The New Zealand Union of Students' Associations (NZUSA) and Auckland University Students' Associations (AUSA) say in the last ten years fees at the University of Auckland have increased 50.82 percent, or by over $2400 per student per year.

They say almost half of full-time students struggle to pay rent, and student debt will reach $15 billion by February next year.

At 4pm tomorrow the University of Auckland will be setting fees, so students will gather in the university's quad at 1pm to protest the "growing debt sentence".

Speakers will include Gareth Hughes, David Cunliffe and Marama Fox.

New Zealand has 400,000 students at universities, polytechnics and in trades training.
