One man has drowned and another has been missing for hours at a lake in the Bay of Plenty.

Rescue teams have been searching McLaren Falls near Tauranga for one person who has failed to resurface after falling into the water at about 5pm today.

One of the men is believed to have fallen off a rope swing into the lake and the other dived in to rescue him, police said.

Officers have recovered one of their bodies.

Helicopters and boats are searching the area for the second man and floodlights are being put up to continue the search in the dark, a police spokesman said.

He said police would continue looking for a few more hours and dive squads were being prepared for the morning if the man was not found tonight.
