Hundreds of staff members have been evacuated from the Dunedin City Council Civic Centre building around 9am this morning.
Mayor Dave Cull says the noise was a gas bomb going off to suppress any fire, following an electrical fault.
No one is reported injured and the gas has to be removed from the building before staff can re-enter. It is expected to take an hour.
