Two men who drowned at a popular Bay of Plenty swimming hole have been named by police.

Tauranga man Maninder Singh, 26, and 24-year-old Jagdeep Singh, from Gisborne, drowned after a rope swing broke at McLaren Falls, sending the older man falling into the water.

Jagdeep Singh, also known as Gary, jumped in to try to rescue him.

Search teams recovered one of their bodies on Monday, with divers finding the second the following morning.

Hemi Tipene, a spokesperson for Maninder Singh's family, said in a statement his family had visited the site yesterday and the men's bodies would be flown to India.
