There has been an increase in the number of under-age drinkers using fake IDs to get into Manawatu bars.

In the past month, bar staff have seized more than 35 IDs used fraudulently.

Sergeant Brendon Gerrish says teenagers are often using ones they've purchased from an older friend or sibling.

"For bar staff, there's risk to them for allowing minors on their premises, and there's a huge financial repercussion for them. Likewise with the licensees, [they face] having their license suspended as well as with the managers, having their licenses suspended."

It is an offence to both use or supply a fake ID, and both the borrower and the lender of a fake ID faces a fine of up to $2000.
