Two men stormed a bar in Christchurch last night, one wielding a firearm and the other a screwdriver.

Police are appealing to the public for any information related to the aggravated robbery at the Phoenix Bar in Papanui, which occurred around 10pm.

"The two men have forced the duty manager to open a safe, removing a small amount of cash, before leaving in a silver Subaru Forester station wagon, registration FUU396. The vehicle used in the robbery had been stolen from a public parking area on Riccarton Avenue earlier that day at around 3pm," Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says.

Police say the firearm was used during the robbery but no one was injured. Staff and bar patrons are being supported by police and victim support and were left shaken.

Snr Sgt Cottam is urging anyone who saw the vehicle or has any information to come forward.

Police are also advising the public and businesses who handle cash to be extra vigilant in the lead up to the busy festive period.
