Arson charge after Christchurch house fire

A man has been charged with arson in Christchurch after an abandoned quake-damaged property was extensively damaged by fire overnight.

The Worcester St property, which police say was used by homeless people, caught fire at about 1am this morning.

"The fire started to the rear of the property and spread into the roof space causing extensive damage," said Detective Greg Murray.

No-one was injured and no other properties were damaged in the fire, he said.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who was in Worcester St near Stanmore Rd prior to the fire.

A 49-year-old man will appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.
