An Auckland Grammar School teacher caught masturbating in a classroom had been accused of downloading porn at a school before and has now been deregistered.

In June 2013, Simon Toon was caught watching pornography on a laptop and masturbating in a classroom during lunch at the school.

He was seen by a student and was suspended from teaching, before later resigning.

In May, Toon was convicted of doing an indecent act in a public place and sentenced to nine months' supervision and 80 hours' community work.

In a new decision, the Teachers' Disciplinary Tribunal said Toon had also been accused of downloading pornography at a different school 15 years prior.

He resigned from that job, but said he had only allowed a male relative to download pornography onto a school laptop.

His teaching certificate was renewed after that based on an outstanding reference from his employer.

He has now been deregistered.

In the agreed facts, a search of Toon's laptop showed he had accessed pornographic sites more than 100 times over a year, the Tribunal said.

It said he had on occasion accessed porn while teaching a class.

When Auckland Grammar School found out about the allegations in 2013 he was immediately suspended.
