Boy critical after falling through skylight

A 12-year-old boy critically injured after he fell through a skylight at a Palmerston North primary school has been transferred to Starship Children's Hospital.

He remains in a "stable but critical" condition, according to police.

Family are with him and they are being supported by police and Victim Support.

A passerby noticed three young boys on the roof of the school just after 8pm yesterday and called police to report it.

A police patrol car arrived soon after to find one of the boys had fallen through a skylight.

His friends broke into the building to get to where he lay.

The boy was initially taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

Police have not named the school or the boy.

In November Jordan McKeown, 14, died after falling through a skylight in the roof of an arcade at Caroline Bay in Timaru.

A week later two teenagers were seriously injured after falling through the same skylight. The council boarded up that skylight.

Police urge parents to remind children to stay safe and not to take any unnecessary risks.
