Capsized kayaker rescued off Taranaki coast

A kayaker who capsized off the Taranaki coast has been plucked from the sea by a rescue helicopter.

The 40-year-old man, who was wearing a life jacket but not a wet suit, was winched aboard the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter after getting into trouble about 1km off the coast of Bell Block just north of New Plymouth.

Taranaki Search and Rescue urges people who plan to endeavour into the hills or sea to make sure they tell somebody else of their plans, including where they will be and when they will be returning.

People are also advised to carry appropriate equipment with them when heading outdoors, and to consider carrying an emergency locator beacon.
