A person who killed one man and seriously injured another in Auckland has not been identified, police say.

Nathan Matai Pukeroa, 24, and his friend, 22, were attacked by the same person in Mount Albert early on Thursday, police say.

Mr Pukeroa, from Whangarei, will be buried from the Ohaki Marae, Pawarenga today.

Police have gathered information from as many people as possible during the weekend, but are urging anyone who was in the area to come forward, Detective Inspector Chris Cahill says.

It's important to remember a young man died outside a home in a suburban street, another was seriously injured and that the killer has not been identified or located, he said.

Police are also tracking the movements of a red Toyota ute that left Renton Rd shortly after the fatal attack and want to hear of sightings.

Police believe both men were stabbed.

Det Insp Cahill urged residents to search their properties for anything that could have been used as a weapon.
