A police officer has been stabbed after trying to arrest people suspected of stealing a car in the Northland town of Kaitaia.
The officer was stabbed about 9:30 last night and taken to Kaitaia Hospital before being transferred to Whangarei Hospital.
He is due to be released today, police said in a statement.
Two officers were called to Puriri Pl where three men were seen acting suspiciously around a car which had been reported stolen, said Far North area commander, Inspector Wendy Robilliard.
One of the officers went to arrest one of the men but was struck on the head. The other officer stepped in to help while trying to stop the other two from intervening, she said.
"The offender managed to break free from the injured officer, who realised he had been stabbed, and ran off with the other men," Insp Robilliard said.
One of the men, aged 17, was later found at a Kaitaia address but police are still looking for the attacker.
