New Zealanders have swiped away more than half a billion on Christmas shopping last weekend, the most so far in 2015, according to the latest card payment figures.
The Paymark network recorded its busiest weekend in 2015 between December 20-22, with a record 11.8 million transactions equating to $604.1 million worth of spending.
Underlying growth is up 3.8 percent from the same weekend last year.
"We've seen an across-the-board increase in spending throughout December," Paymark chief executive Mark Rushworth said.
"The growth rate was not as strong over the weekend but we did see new highs for the year in spite of having one more trading day between the weekend and Christmas Day this year."
Friday, December 20 was the busiest day so far in 2015, with $225.5M spent throughout New Zealand but it's still below the $263.5M record set on Christmas Eve last year.
Paymark handles around 75 percent of electronic transactions in New Zealand.
