Two people have had a lucky escape after their kayak capsized near Port Waikato.
Emergency services were called to the area just before lunchtime on Saturday after someone looking out towards the Waikato River saw a kayak sinking.
The two people in the kayak were wearing lifejackets, but they were swept quickly towards the river mouth, a Fire Service spokesman said.
By the time police, firefighters, and ambulance and Coastguard personnel arrived, they were in the middle of the river and could be heard yelling for help.
A private boat was used to bring the two to shore.
Ambulance staff said they were suffering from mild hypothermia.
