Trampers exploring New Zealand's great outdoors will have a little less sting in their step after a targeted wasp bait was approved for public use.
The Department of Conservation has approved use of the Vespex bait made by a Nelson-based company Merchento after outstanding trials on public conservation sites earlier this year.
Wasp activity at the sites using the product were reduced by more than 95 percent.
The DOC say the wasp bait will be a welcome reprieve for native birds and insects, along with those getting out to enjoy New Zealand's wilderness.
Previously, the Vespex wasp bait was only licensed for use on public conservation land but now it will be made available to people who have completed an online training test.
