A voluntary recall has been sent out to the owners of Apple's AC wall plug adapters in a number of countries -- including New Zealand.

The plugs, which are also used in continental Europe, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea, are believed to break and cause electrical shock in rare cases.

Apple has revealed there has so far been 12 incidents of users receiving an electric shock from the plug.

Shipped with Mac computers and some iOS devices between 2003 and 2015, Apple is requesting anyone who owns one of the wall plugs to stop using it immediately and exchange it for a redesigned version.

The affected plugs are recognisable because they have either zero, four or five characters on the inside slot where it connects to the power adapter.

More details on how to identify the affected plugs can be found at www.apple.com/support/ac-wallplug-adapter.
