The body of a man found in a Nelson river this morning is not suspicious, say police.
Police were alerted to the body just after 6am in the Maitai River, off Halifax St.
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, and the man was deceased when emergency services arrived.
The body has been retrieved from the water and witnesses have been spoken to.
A bicycle and a backpack were found nearby, and police believe they know the identity of the deceased. This will not be released until police are done notifying next-of-kin.
Despite there being no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, police are still appealing to anyone who was in the area this morning that may have seen the body in the river. They are asked to call (03) 546 3840.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
