Child hospitalised after near-drowning north of Auckland

A seven-year-old boy is fighting for his life following a near-drowning in a swimming pool north of Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the Palm Springs Thermal Pool in Parakai, just after 11am when the boy was seen to be unresponsive at the bottom of the pool.

Fire Communications Shift Manager Steve Smith says the boy was assessed before a rescue helicopter arrived.

"When we got there our officers started CPR on the person involved until such time where the ambulance got there."

The boy was revived at the scene but is now in a critical condition at Starship Hospital.

He and his family had been visiting the pool for the day, and police say they are providing support to the family.
