The sound of hearts breaking echoed across the country yesterday when Richie McCaw announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Gemma Flynn.
But despite the collective sigh of disappointment from New Zealand's female population, congratulations have flowed in for the happy couple - from Flynn's teammates in the Black Sticks, thousands of online well-wishers and even the Daily Mail doing a write up.
McCaw's Facebook post announcing the news attracted more than 99,000 likes and nearly 6000 comments by this morning and had been shared almost 3000 times.
