A piece of Abel Tasman National Park can now be added to the list of things people have tried to crowdfund for.

A Givealittle page has been set up by Canterbury property company Communitas in the hopes of buying a $2 million private beach at Awaroa.

Communitas says it wants to take the property off the private market in order to allow it to remain public land.

"After a Christmas Day conversation discussing things 'New Zealand', we decided to give everyday people the chance to try keep this beautiful and picturesque piece of NZ permanently off the property market and in the hands of all future generations of NZ'ers and visitors," it says on its page.

But it has some serious work left to do, with only $13,000 of the $2m raised so far.

The seven-hectare inlet was listed before Christmas and includes 800 metres of private beach.

Communitas says the money would not be paid out until it had won the tender for the land and says it will give the land to the Department of Conservation or a suitable trust.
