A man who was allegedly involved in breaking a Waitemata man's jaw after attacking him several times with a hammer is being hunted by police.

Renata Tangitu Panui, 32, is wanted by police in relation to the serious assault at a Te Atatu Peninsula property on Tuesday morning.

A man was admitted to hospital in a serious condition after he was hit several times around the head with a hammer, fracturing his jaw among other injuries.

Despite a police helicopter and ground units, the attacker was not found.

Panui also has a warrant for his arrest after failing to appear in the Waitakere District Court in relation to serious family violence matters.

He is considered to be dangerous and should not be approached.

Police say the attack was not random and the victim knew the alleged offender.
