The winner of a $7 million Powerball ticket sold in Timaru has come forward.

The winning ticket was sold at Timaru Pak'nSave and was made up of $6M from Powerball First Division and $1M from Lotto First Division.

It is the biggest prize ever to be won in Timaru.

The winner flew to Auckland to claim the prize, and says she had been sleeping with the ticket every night since the win.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, says they've been buying a ticket as a family for years.

She says she checked their ticket "about a hundred times".

"But when I pulled up the results on MyLotto, I saw we had four numbers in a row and I panicked and turned the computer off," she says.

"I was just so nervous. After a couple of deep breaths, I turned the computer back on and checked the rest of the numbers – and they were all there. My hands started shaking. It just felt so unreal."

She wants to use the win to help family, buy a property and to travel.

"I'm a huge fan of the Rugby Sevens, maybe I could follow the boys on the 2016 World Series tournaments?" the winner says.

"But right now, we're going to hit the shops!"
