An arrest has been made following a serious crash involving five young people in December.

The man has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury; his blood alcohol level was 153 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

There is a zero alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20.

In the early hours of December 1, 2015 the car was on Plateau Rd in Upper Hutt when a 16-year-old female passenger was hanging the top half of her body out the window.

The 19-year-old driver lost control, rolled the vehicle and crashed through a fence.

The girl suffered multiple serious injuries as the car rolled on top of her and was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition but is now at home recovering from her injuries.

The driver is due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on next week.

The three other passengers, all 16-year-old girls, were also injured but not to a serious extent.

Police are awaiting the final medical report regarding injuries sustained before a decision is made on further charges.
