A man is in a critical condition following an incident where he received a serious head injury during an apparent struggle involving an imitation firearm.

Police are still at the scene on Mt Albert Rd in Mt Roskill, Auckland and say a man has allegedly shown an imitation gun to a person living at a house on the road.

They say the man was restrained by those at the house and appears to have received serious injuries during the struggle.

He's been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A next door neighbour, Donna, told RadioLIVE she saw a man covered in blood running along the driveway and onto the street and police arriving on the scene.

She had been having a coffee and a cigarette outside and as a care worker at a rest home thought she could help the man.

"I went down there and he ran back up the driveway and I thought 'I wonder what house he went to' so I stopped and I saw the police coming up the road so I walked towards them," she says.

Armed police then told her to put her hands up and get on the ground.

"And I'm like 'it's not me, I've just come to help'."

She says she then saw up to five armed police officers head onto the property.

Donna was asked if she'd called the police or seen a man with a shotgun – she hadn't.

"We've only been here for about a month and a half and I moved from Onehunga where this sort of thing happens all the time.

"It was a bit of a shock after sitting here having a coffee and a cigarette," she says.
