A man has drowned while swimming in the Waikato River.
Emergency services were called to the scene at Malcom Street, in southern Hamilton, about 4:45pm today.
Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering said the man, believed to be in his 40s, had been drinking with friends before going for a swim and vanishing out of sight.
He said it appeared the man had been unable to cope with the dangerous river conditions.
He was found unresponsive shortly after by people at the nearby beach.
Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him at the scene, he said.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
