The name of the Canterbury man who fell to his death while tramping on the Mawson Glacier in South Westland has been released by police.

The body of Eric Jacomb, 54, was recovered yesterday morning after the alarm was raised when he didn't meet up with the rest of his five-person tramping party on Saturday evening.

A member of the party radioed authorities after he didn't join them at Top Butler Hut.

His body was sighted at the base of a bluff on Mawson Glacier near the headwaters of the Whateroa River by the Alpine Cliff Rescue Team when they flew into the area early on Sunday morning.

"It appears the man has slipped and tragically fallen to his death," Sergeant Sean Judd said.

"It was a technical recovery and we certainly needed the team's skills in this type of terrain."

The body has been flown to Fox Glacier and the rest of the party were flown to Franz Josef.

The man's family have been informed and his death has been referred to the coroner.
