Nearly-drowned German surfer reunites with rescuer

A German surfer who was smashed against rocks at St Clair Beach at the weekend has been reunited with his rescuer.

Nineteen-year-old Paul Hunsche only took up surfing after arriving in New Zealand last year.

That inexperience nearly cost him on Sunday after pounding waves at St Clair Beach smashed him against the sea wall and concrete access stairs.

Veteran surfer Jeff Patton quickly grabbed a rope and threw the tourist a lifeline.

And today, Mr Hunsche met with Mr Patton who says he is stoked the German surfer is back and healthy.
